Evening Swim, St Mawes — Study

Painted from the harbour beach at St Mawes, Cornwall, on a summer evening.

Two swimmers were out in the water, in no hurry at all to get out. You could tell from the beach how good it felt — that particular reluctance of a last swim, when the light is going and nobody wants to be the one to call it.

I had company while I painted. Colin, a dachshund puppy of questionable character, arrived with clear designs on my pasty. Having been turned down, he settled instead on my fisherman’s jumper beside the easel and slept there until I’d finished.

Oil on canvas board, A4 (approximately 30 × 21 cm). Painted entirely on location. Signed.
